Who is James Gregory?

Create a well-developed paragraph that characterizes James Gregory from the film Farwell Bafana. Clearly state the type of person he is and find a quotation that accurately supports your opinion. Be certain to describe how the quotation fits your description of James and summarize your paragraph by stating something you have learned through his life. Your task:
  1. Describe the character of James Gregory.
  2. Find a quotation to support your opinion
  3. State something that you have learned from his life
  4. Avoid using “I” or “My” statements
The paragraph is about the character traits- his personality- and not about the movie or his job. Be careful not to plot summarize your paragraph. If you summarize the film, or just summarize his life on Robben Island, you are writing off topic.  The focus is on describing his personality and the type of person he was during a time of social change in South Africa.Be  certain to focus on:
  • words (adjectives) that best describe his personality.
  • a quotation that is only being used by you that focuses on his personality, character.
  • a paragraph is a paragraph.  DO not separate the sentences into various groups.

  1. Integrity is the art of standing by your moral principles and doing what is right. even if it is unpopular. In life, our beliefs will constantly be challenged by others and often times it is much easier to avoid conflict than to stand up for what we believe. It separates leaders from followers. James Gregory, the man from the autobiographical film, Farwell Bafana, is not a person who would avoid conflict for the sake of peace if it meant going against his own moral judgment. In his life, James demonstrated a willingness to challenge the popular beliefs of Apartheid in South Africa even if it left him unpopular with his colleagues. His courage, independence and determination to stand with Mandela could best be summed up with words of Mark Twain, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear.” Similar to James, he could not remove the fear from his life but he learned to master it to stay true to himself and his beliefs. Needless to say, we could all learn something from Mr. Gregory.

  2. «Courage is not the absence of fear but the acquired ability to move beyond fear». This quote tells us to stay strong even though you are terrified. It means to keep fighting even though you might lose. It says that to fight for what you want is a very important thing and to keep fighting for what you need. You can’t let your fears control you; if you do you will not live a good life. How would the world have been if nobody took chances? No one would have succeeded; people would have been very different from what they are today. Imagine yourself gay and alone, in this situation the only thing you can do is to be honest and fight for yourself. They are scared, but they still chose to be honest, they choose to fight to get a better life. Even though people who are gay get discriminated and treaded like they are less wordy, they still overcome their biggest fear. «Courage is not the absence of fear but the acquired ability to move beyond fear», we have to move beyond fear and keep fighting. Even if you feel like life isn’t getting any better it will for sure. The meaning of life is to make the best out of it, and if you choose to be scared and not to take chances, what is the meaning of life then?

  3. James Gregory lives in Robbin Island. He works in the prison there. His job is to watch Nelson Mandela, who sits in prison. Gregory changes in the film. First he was very rude, and he wasn’t agreeing with anything of Mandela’s opinions. Gregory and his family were on a trip, and then some police men took the black people who were there. They took a woman with a baby, and this saw Gregory’s daughter. She felt very bad, and told her father that she thought it was wrong. This made Gregory change his meaning. He started to be nice with Mandela. He also break the rules, ha took a gift from Mandela and gave it to his wife. “If you want something you’ve never had, then you’ve got to do something you’ve never done.” This quotation tells how Gregory changes through the film. He changes and act in a different way than he has done before. From his life I have learned that people can change. They can start looking at things in different ways than they have done before.

  4. What is courage? «Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear. » is a quote by Ambrose Redmoon; a writer who could show such reflection, only with one sentence. Redmoon is with this quote trying to tell us that no matter how scared you are; when it comes to certain situations you just have to forget every fear you have because something else matters more. The dictionary defines courage as: “the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery”, but what does it mean to have courage? Courage is to face the unknown, to do something that you are afraid of. Many think of courage as risking your life for your country, running into a burning building, or standing up for what you believe in. However; courage comes in many different forms, which you experience every day. On the first day of kinder garden children have to be brave and have courage to leave home, meet new people and make a new routine; and the parents have to be courageous enough to let their children go. A school student needs to have courage to stand up for another student that is being picked on. Courage can even be trying new food for the first time, answering a question in class even though you are not sure if it is correct, or telling the truth regardless of what the consequences may be. Courage is to take risks and move forward even though you fear of what it leads to. This is what Redmoon is trying to tell us; to be courageous is to face challenges even though you are scared. You need courage every day, for all the little situations and challenges you face. After all, if you lose your courage; you have truly lost all.

  5. James Gregory was a South African prison guard that was known for being the letter sensor and prison guard on Robben Island, also then including Nelson Mandela. He wrote the book “Goodbye Bafana: Nelson Mandela, My Prisoner, My Friend” he was a husband and a father for two kids.

“No one is born to hate another person because of the colour of skin, or his background or his religion. People learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love. For love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite “– Nelson Mandela

That people actually get judged because of their skin colour and how they got treated and probably get threaten now as well. We saw how it was for them and how white people just ignored it and believed it was good. How it was wrong and terrible that someone could treat other humans like that because of the skin colour.

  6. James Gregory worked like a prison guard in Robert Island. He worked at where the letters got in and he was washing Nelson Mandela when he was there at the prison. After a bit time working at the prison he change a lot and was starting to care about the prisoners and Nelson Mandela. He had a family with two children and a wife. He`s work made him and his family move a lot.

If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner. ( Nelson Mandela )

That you shoot never gush a person before you knowing them and you shoot never gush a person because of their skin color.

  7. James Gregory
In the film Farwell Bafana you follow a person named James Gregory that is working at the prison in Robben Island in the 1960 with Nelson Mandela. James Gregory is a young man he has a wife and two children and they lives in old military house the get free because of James Gregory’s job. James Gregory is a very proud man in the beginning of the movie and he is also very proud of the job he have he does it good at the job in the prison. James Gregory does that commander want he to does in the start of the movie but changes in to the movie and go against the commander and the rules. But through the movie he changes into a person that has big compassion especially when it comes to he’s family. James Gregory is also a person that is critical in the way of thinking, James Gregory is not supporting people that do things that do not gives meaning. A quotation that describes James Gregory” Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” This quote shows that James Gregory is a man that really is brave and not scarred of the fear he will meet with go against the rules. James Gregory believe that he was a good man in the beginning and did the right things, but then he realized how stupid the things he did were and change in to the movie. After the movie I have learn that you can see god and bad sides off a person and the person can changes one day and do the right things instead of the bad things like James Gregory.

  8. James Gregory
James Gregory was a careful, loved and a good husband and father to his family. Mr. Gregory was working in the “prison” where the black people were luck up. James did care a lot of all of them, he also grew up with one friend that was black. And has always looked at all people the same. He was a loving husband and a father for two. He did care for all, and didn’t care if they were black or white. At first everyone loved him because he was “mean” and didn’t care for the black people. But when he meet nelson, everything changes with James. It’s just he is more open to help, and he wants the best for them. Mr. Gregory was so great with the black people. He helped them, and they were his friends. James was very protective to his children. He didn’t want them to see when people were mean to the black people. He just wanted the best for everybody, and that is something that we can learn from. He saw people like “people”. He didn’t judge them, he didn’t hear on the roomers. He was listening to his own heart, and followed that. Everyone can follow their heart, and don’t hear what your friend is saying, think on your own. And one scene in the movie and the call him to say “your son is dead” you could really see how bad he had it. He had a very big heart, and was blaming himself for it. He had so bad confident and he thought that this was his fault. So we can all learn from this movie.

  10. In the autobiographical film «Farewell Bafana» you follow a person named James Gregory, Gregory is a person that is different from the other characters in the film, he is not supporting people’s behavior that does not make sense. James Gregory also has an ability to see the reason why things happen from both sides of the story, not only one, compassionate is also a word that describes Gregory in a very good way. It is compassion that makes Gregory the way he is and that helps him through his changes. A quotation that shows Gregory’s personality and his changes in the film is a quote by Nelson Mandela: “Courage is not the absence of fear, but to triumph over it.” This quote shows that Gregory is a man that is really brave and open minded. He made changes and went against everyone, and that is something very brave. It is not only brave to say that you do not mean what other people mean, but also to admit it to yourself. After this movie you can clearly see that it is good and bad sides in everyone, and also that people can change and grow. James Gregory teaches us that the ability to show compassion to other people and to go against the rest of the group can be hard, but it will come back to in a positive way later in life. If you are only looking at a conflict through one part’s eyes, you are not looking at the real conflict. This is what Gregory teaches us; to see the world through others eyes, not only your own.

  11. Courage is to take risks and move forward even though you fear of what it leads to. In life you will experience situations where you are alone with your opinion, and you can either choose to agree with what you think is wrong, or choose to fight for what you think is right. James Gregory was a man who lived in a world full of stereotypes, racism and discrimination. The acts of those around you can easily affect you, and how you act. Gregory is one of those strong and confident people in this world who dared to think different than everyone around him; he did not want to be affected by a world so cruel. He clearly demonstrates courage and mental strength to go against his upbringing, society and stand up for what he believed in. Ambrose Redmoon once said, «Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear. » Similar to the above quotation, James had every reason to be scared; he could lose his job, he could lose the respect of those around him, and the lives of his family were threatened. Gregory had courage because in spite of his fears; he still fought for what he thought was right because he knew that was more important. Some people understand that if we want the world to be different, we have to do something about it ourselves; and James Gregory was one of them. Gregory with his courage, integrity, bravery, critical thinking, and caring self he managed to open many people’s minds. From his life we learned that just because the majority has another opinion than you have; that does not mean that your opinion is wrong. He taught us to believe in ourselves, and stand up for ourselves. He taught us that your voice matter; and that everyone can make a change if they are willing to.

  12. Brave, sometimes it is hard to be brave, to stand up for your believes even though you’re the only one saying your opinion. James Gregory didn’t care what people thought of him as long as he did what he thought what right. He risked a lot when he decided to go against everyone. James grew up with a colored child, and that’s why James chose to see the good in people. He treaded people like people. As James became a man he started to hide his feelings and thoughts, but it came to a point that he couldn’t see the black people suffer anymore. How would the world have been without people like James Gregory? Without brave people? James thought us that no matter what always stand up for what’s right, if no one does the world will never become a better place. «Courage is not the absence of fear but the acquired ability to move beyond fear». This quote tells us to stay strong even though you are terrified. It means to keep fighting even though you might lose. It says that to fight for what you want is a very important thing and to keep fighting for what’s right, just like James Gregory.

  13. In Farewell Banafa we see the movie from James’ perspective in a society of integrity. He’s work’s where Mandela is because he understand’s the language. In the movie James start’s to change as he spends’s time with Mandela and the other dark skinned people. He understands more when he is with Mandela and his crew. The white people treat them like animals and slaves just because their skin colour and abuse them for every small reason or at not for any reason at all. Gregory’s kids are starting to ask question why they threat them like that and all of this is affecting him. He start’s to think for him what is right and what is wrong because he sees the act from another perspective than the others. The people are learned from their childhood that the “niggers” are savages and terrorists. Gregory slowly start’s to change and become a more independent man “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, because love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” –Nelson Mandela. Most of the people are usually afraid of people and other stuff because they don’t know it. Farewell Bafana shows how everyone can be dynamic once it get’s to know its fear.

  14. There are two kinds of people in the world. People how think for themselves, and those how follow the others because of fear. James Gregory is definitely in the first group. He is an officer how comes to Robben Island in 1968 to work in the prison whit Nelson Mandela. James is a brave man how stands up for his believe even if it means to be unpopular among his co- workers and risking his family. He shows critical thinking for the apartheid system and sees people as people. He comes to the black’s whit an open mind and not whit prejudices and racism. This is a quote from Gandhi that describes what Mr. Gregory did in the movie Farwell Bafana, “The enemy is fear. We think it is hate; but it is fear” He found out that fear was the real enemy not the black people ore communism. There are many things that we can learn from the life of James Gregory but the most important one is to stand up for your believes and see people as people.

  15. Coloured people doesn’t have the same rights as the white people, and the movie Farewell Bafana is a good example of how coloured people used to be treated in the prison on Robben Island. Now things have changed, and there’s more equality between people. The coloured people have more rights, but some still mean the white have too much power. Through the years the white people learned in their childhood that the black people were dangerous and terrorists. That black people were less worth than the white people, and should be treated differently. “The only thing that white people have that black people need, or should want, Is power-and no one holds power forever.” – James Baldwin
Farewell Bafana is a movie about the relationship between Nelson Mandela and the prison guard James Gregory. James Gregory is a husband and a father to two children that works as a guard in a prison on Robben Island. Gregory speaks Mandela’s native language of Xhosa, which makes it even more important that Gregory guards Mandela. He can listen to what Mandela and his people are discussing and make sure that they don’t plan to escape. Spending time with Mandela changes James personality. He is beginning to see things in a different way. The white people treat the black people as animals and use them as slaves just because of their skin tone. The black people gets abused and punished for every small thing and for doing nothing at all. Gregory first gets affected by how the black people were threatened when his children were starting to ask questions about why the prisoners were threated so badly. His children are trained to be nice with other people and be polite to other people, so to see the coloured people getting punished and threated as animals shocks them. This made James think of what was right and what was wrong. Doing what was right were risky and Gregory risk to lose everything by being honest and agree with Mandela.

  16. James Gregory was the only prison guard who had the courage to speak up for himself and try to see the Nelson Mandela and the other black in the prison as people and not a terrorist or a property. In the film, Farewell Bafana, he treats the black the same way as the other guards, but later he realizes that the black are worth just as much as the white people. He was brave, saw things from another perspective then others and most important he tried to be open-minded. He was willing to challenge the beliefs of others and continue doing what he thought was the right thing to do. ‘‘Success is not final. Failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts’’ This quotation explains James Gregory and what he did for the black people. He had the courage to speak up for himself even though he did not have anyone to support him or his decisions. He kept going no matter how hard hit got, he showed the others that he were brave.

  18. «Goodbye Bafana» James Gregory
In the film Farewell Bafana you meet a man called James Gregory in the 1960s. He works at the prison that is called Robben Island. He is a regular man that is taught to hate the black people just like the others, but after his daughter saw a white man beate up a black man she started to ask why he is being treated like that and that is when James Gregory is starting to change. He is beginning to see that the white are abusing the black for no reason. That makes James begin to understand that the black are just fighting for equal rights. After wards in the film he is changing to a person that has big compassion for people, but escpecially for his family. He is also developing to a person that is critical in the way of thinking; he is escpecially not supporting something that does not make sense. A quotation that fits to James Gregory is “With courage you will dare to take risks, have the strength to be compassionate, and the wisdom to be humble. Courage is the foundation of integrity” –Mark Twain. What you can learn from James Gregory is that you must not follow the pack but follow what you feel is right because they are not always right

  20. James Gregory is a man who lives on Robben Island as a prison guard. He is also a man who cares about the black people and the white people. He stands up for himself and he has his own opinion. He changes over time in the movie “Goodbye Bafana” as he sees that the black people don’t get treated well. His wife Gloria is against him in the start of the movie but she starts to understands him later in the movie. “No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background or his religion. People learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” This is a quote by Nelson Mandela. The quote means that we don’t hate a person because he or her is different, we get taught to hate. If we can be taught to hate we can be taught to love. The quote was really good and it explains the culture in Norway today.

  21. “The 3 C`s of life: Choices, Chances, Changes. You must make a choice to take a chance or your life will never change.” This quote is similar to James Gregory’s life in the movie “Goodbye Bafana”. James has the courage to take his own choice, and that is may be because of his background. James grew up on a farm with a black kid called Bafana. James didn’t care about his skin colour, and that is probably because children don’t care about how the person looks, but they are searching after a good personality. Although James grew up with a black kid, the time changed him. Almost everyone thought that black people were a bad kind of people, and that is may be because of how the media was against the black people. They said that the black people were terrorists, and that the ANC was a dangerous group. Was this true though? James asked himself that question. He began to ask questions about the Apartheid system, and how they handled things in prison. Small acts got James thinking. These acts started the process to James`s change. The big turning point in James life was when he met Nelson Mandela. James was Nelson`s jailer, and Nelson talked to James about a lot of things. When he did so, James could see all of the racism from a new perspectiv. The white people thought that the freedom declaration was about to exterminate the white people, but Nelson said that it was about equality. So James became curious and brave. He went against what the white people thought about the black people, although he became unpopular by his friends, colleagues and neighbours. He was tired of being a follower and wanted to change, and become a leader. He did so! James started to stand up for himself, and believe in his own choices. This shows us how brave James was, and that we also should be able to think and take our own decisions. We should all learn something from James, because he chose to take a chance to change his thoughts about the black community and how they opperated.

  23. Putting yourself and your family in danger for your beliefs is both brave and risky. When society is failing to see the wider perspective when it comes to plural cultures and different ethnic backgrounds, then starts to act upon their level of fear and unknowing. Someone needs to stand up for it in order to achieve a change. James Gregory is a one of a kind, he is brave enough to stand up for his independent perspective towards the apartheid system in South Africa. Throughout Gregory`s childhood he grew up with a friend who was coloured, and that might be the reason why James is able to see how the coloured people feel about the apartheid system, rather than how the white see it. Because of his different perspective, opinion and thoughts he became unpopular amongst his friends, colleagues and even his family. But that didn’t stop him from doing what he believed was the right thing. «Don`t wait for the perfect moment, take the moment and make it perfect» one wise man once said, James knew that the society was failing, he also knew that waiting for someone to change is a waste of time, and that sitting and watching whilst waiting for a change is a luxury human mankind don`t provide us. And that was when Mr. Gregory started to resist and go against the majority, because if he wouldn’t, who would?

  24. No one is born with their opinions, we are taught them and when everybody is claiming something it can be really hard to convince them to believe something else and stand up for yourself. James Gregory is a man who thought that every black people were criminals, terrorists and worse than white people. He was a misled man. And it isn’t fair to judge him because of his beliefs, because he was not born with his beliefs, he was taught them from a very young age. The society that he lived in did not accept black people as equal to the white men. James worked as a prison guard and one day, his whole outlook on black people changed. He met Nelson Mandela at the prison, a man who wanted a world were all men were equal. James learned more and more from him, which shows that he was willing and able to change. He learned that white and black are just colours and stood up for himself, even though everybody was against him. He became a new man and helped Mandela to be freed from prison. He became a man who wasn’t brainwashed by his society, but aware of the truth. Mark Twain once said; “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.” This can be related to James because he was not fearless; on the contrary, he must have been terrified. He could loose his own life, when he was standing up for the black people, but he managed to master his fear and not run away from it, while everybody was telling him that he was wrong. We all can learn something from James, like for example that we should always stand up for ourselves when you know something is right, even though everybody is against you. James was a dynamic man, independent and smart man, who managed to stand up for himself, when it seemed that all hope was gone. We are not born with our beliefs, we are taught them.

  25. James Gregory is a smart and almost fearless person. He wanted to fight against the government and end the apartheid in South-Africa. James Gregory was a human so wasn’t scared of helping other people even if they have different skin colour. He changed a lot throw the movie and he sees the problem. Quotation is “change yourself before you change the world”. James Gregory was already different when he comes to prison, but he still had to change. He had many reason to just be like others, but he had his own way. We can learn something important from him. He trying to say be the person you want to be, never give up and never change if you don’t think it`s right. He also shows us that no one is different and everyone should have same respect to each other.
