  1. "To deny someone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity.” Is a quote by the famous freedom fighter Nelson Mandela who leaded the demonstrations against the Apartheid system in South Africa in the 1960’s. Behind these powerful words you can find a very important message. The meaning behind this quote is that when a person discriminates another person’s rights. He or she shows an excellent picture of who the person really is. It shows the person’s ability to see to sides of a case, it also shows the person’s ability to show compassion over other human beings. The quote also shows us that it is not how you look or your background that says something about you as a human being, it shows us that it is what we do that does that. An example of people that act like this is how many Australians discriminate the Aborigines (the indigenous people in Australia) just because their background and look. It shows the attitude to many Australians and their way of thinking and personality.

  2. Nelson Mandela’s words often share his perspective on how inequality leads to conflict. His life and words are clearly linked to the ongoing struggle for equal treatment in South Africa, and his vision and wisdom is still a guide to his people. In the quotation, “As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest”, Mandela clearly captures the idea that injustice for one is an injustice for all. It is difficult to argue with his perspective because of the many examples that exist in our world, today. If one group is not allowed the rights of others in a society, it is impossible to envision that society being prosperous and free of conflict. For example, the current situation at Standing Rock in the USA shows that unrest will continue if a group of people are not heard, or treated fairly. The natives in America are battling for the right to have their water and land protected, and they are finding that American Corporate interest/ profits are more important than their land. The injustice and gross inequality are creating tension and unrest to a group of Americans that are seldom seen, and less often heard.

  3. Nelson Mandela said “As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest.” These words hold a great truth, because we really should not just sit back and be content in our own little safe bubble here in Norway while there are great injustices happening all over the world. “Dare not to sleep”, a famous Norwegian poem written by Arnulf Ă˜verland in 1939 warning about the Nazis says it well:

You oughn’t abide, sitting calm in your home
Saying: Dismal it is, poor they are, and alone
You cannot permit it! You dare not, at all.
Accepting that outrage on all else may fall!
I cry with the final gasps of my breath:
You dare not repose, nor stand and forget

We are all human, we are all equals, we are all brothers and sisters. Thus if you are one of the lucky ones living in one of the world’s richest and safest countries, you actually do have an obligation to care about your brothers and sisters in the rest of the world. For instance, women lucky enough to live in Norway, where we are supposed to have equal rights and the same opportunities as men, should not close their eyes to or tolerate the injustices done to other women around the world, simply because it is not happening to “us”. 12 year-olds are being forced to marry older men in Afghanistan, women are forced to wear burkas in Afghanistan, and young girls are being trafficked in Thailand. These women are our sisters, and they might not have the strength to fight for themselves. Therefore Mandela’s quote is something we should all take to heart, even if it means that we never truly can rest. Dare not to sleep!

  6. “To deny someone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity.”
The words that Mandela spoke means that if you want to take someone eases human rights you make yourself less of a human. I´m agree with Mandela because all humans are equal and if you take rights from someone like you, you don´t deserve them yourself. In Mandelas time the white apartheid had all the power in South Africa they didn’t give black people the same rights as the whites had.

  7. "As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality perist in our world, none of us kan truly rest." is a quote by Nelson Mandela. The quote means that even if you are not living in poverty yourself you are still affected by it and it makes an impact on you. Even if your life is great, you still feel bad about what sadness other people in the world experience. This quote makes very much sense because you may have a good life, but you still feel like something is missing; like something is incomplete. Some feel bad because of other people's sadness, and therefore is their wealth and their money not good enough. An example of a situation like this can be the norwegian siticants who are from one of the richest and wealthiest countries in the world. Just because the wealth is good, and that norwegians are safe; does not mean they do not feel bad or spoiled because of the poverty that exists. Many people often think about how lucky they are, and how cruel the world is; this can for many be stressful. Some often feel spoiled, and some feel like they do not deserve what they have; and this make them stressed and sad. With all of this poverty on people's minds and this sadness in our hearts we can't really sleep.

  8. The message Mandela want to give is that if you take someone’s human rights you challenge their humanity, because a part of humanity is to have human rights and a life where you can decide what you want. Many people agree with Mandela because human rights are one of the most important things in a human life, and the statement Mandela is trying to convey through this quote is very important and true. Regardless of what sex, skin and religion you have these rights should be mandatory to every one human. Just because you breathe it doesn’t mean you’re alive. North-Korea is an example of a country with a bad human right violation. Kim Jong Sun is a dictator and the citizens of North-Korea live under his circumstances that are very bad.

  9. "To deny someone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity"
This quote was writen by Nelson Mandela, one of the most famous freedom fighter in history. Nelson Mandela spent many years in jail for fighting for what he thought was right. The quote he wrote was really important, the quote he wrote opened up peoples eyes, they startet realising what they had done wrong, and that they had to change. Nelson Mandela wanted black people to be treaded equal. What he did was amazing, i am so glad someone finally desided to stand up for the colored people, and show the world that they are wordy. More people need to be like Nelson Mandela, it is grate that people is brave enough to stand up for their culture, their family and most importand themself. Just the thought about the years Nelson did spend in jail gives me inspiration, and i think it really changed the socity. The colored people has always been treaded diffrent from the white people. A long time ago the colored people was slaves for the white, they was treaded like they where someone's property and not a human being. The colored do still get dicreminated, but not as bad as it was before. Nelson mandela really helped the colored people to become wordy and equal.

  11. Nelson Mandela was a big inspiration for everyone, of those people who want everyone to have the same rights. Mandela is a very good speaker, and he is standing for his meanings. "As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest." This word tells a lot how we really are. We just sit on our backs and wait for everyone else to something. We don’t won’t do anything to make the world complete, we want that someone else will take responsibility. Those who live a great life don’t think the world is as bad as it is.
I hundred presently agree with him. He is a right man. He is one of them who are standing up for his meanings. Many mean the same as him, but they don’t say it out loud. There is many who don’t have a home, and it is many who live in bad conditions. It is much poverty in the world, much of them who can do something with it is those who are rich. I agree with him, it is much racism and injustice.
He was a very wise man, and he knew what he talked about. He stood up for himself and other. He was not a lonely voice, he was those may thousands voices, who want the same rights. He wants the black to have the same rights as the white. I agree, everyone should have the same rights. The colour of your skin doesn’t tell you what person you are.

  12. "As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest." It was the freedom fighter Nelson Mandela who said those meaningful words. Even though many people agree in this quotation, most of us don’t think about what the quotation really means. The quotation means that no one should rest as long as there are people who are suffering in the world because of injustice and poverty. Everybody should make an effort to make the world a better place for everybody, not just the rich people. It is clear that Nelson’s words are true. No one chose to be born into poverty and the fact that some people are born in to it is heart breaking. Even though the evil circle has existed in many years we can choose to stop in and do something about i . A very good example to all of this is child labour in for example Asia. The children don’t want to work all the day, most of them want to go to school and get an education, but they can’t. They have to work all the day to help the family to earn money, because a land on the other side of the globe has made their home country poor. For all that we know there can sit a future Einstein in the big fabric. He or she will never show the world his or her abilities because he or she has to sit all day and work. The world is unfair. Some are poor and some are rich and it can be hard to rest when you think of all the injustice in this world.

  13. People all over the world suffer and lives under bad conditions because of poverty. Nelson Mandela has always set other people in front of himself. He sees the humanity in a different way than many other people. He has helped the humanity a lot by standing for equal rights between the whites and the black people. “As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest” what I think Mandela mean about this quotation is that the world is unfair. People should not rest until poverty and injustice is exterminated. Those who lives in rich countries may not want to change anything, but someone does and we can’t just sit and watch the rich people that cares do the whole job. If the whole world helps and makes sure taking care of those who suffer in their country I think there may be a chance to exterminate this. We in Norway are lucky to live in such a safe and good community, but seeing those who suffers every day and keeps on fighting for their life is heart breaking. No one deserves poverty and everybody should get the right to education, because education can help futures. People will earn more money and there will be less poverty if everybody had the right to education. No on chose to be born in poverty, and if you but yourself in life as a poor human being you would feel sorry for yourself and hating your own life. People who lives in good countries, where it is safe and you have rights should be more thankful for the good life their living

"To deny someone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity.” Is a quote by the famous freedom fighter Nelson Mandela who leaded the demonstration against apertheid who exists in south afrika and around the afrikan kontinent in 1960s. behind the importan quote. when a person discriminate another person rights. An example of people that act like this is how many Australians discriminate the Aborigines just because their background and how they look. It shows the attitude to the Australia is bad.

  17. All over the world people are experience diffrent things everyday. Some people are experience worse things than others. Many people are living under poverty, discrimination and sexual harassment. Many of the freedoms fighters we have, has lived under this condition. Like Rosa Parks and Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela had a god quote "As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest." I did like this very much. Its like we can never take it easy, because its always something after us. Like things are always after us, when you are having a good time, its always something bad just across the corner. And Nelson Mandela lived under discrimination, and the black was not worth than the white people. The world is still living under this condition. The white poeple are still thinking that they are worth much better than the black, so the black people can never rest, because the white people are always after them. And the rich people are after the poor. The "normal people" are always after the "not normal people. The world is up side down, and everyone should just sit down, and don`t thinks so much over other people. Nelson Mandela and the other freedoms figthers has open many other doors and poosibilities for many people. And the situation today is like people are more standing up for them self. Like in africa and south america, more and more people are standing up for themselfs. And they now they can be punished, but they dont gives up, i really likes the poeple that can stand up for themselfs. I really like the freedoms figthers because they made so many open doors, and changes for the people after them. And the world can never truly rest, before we stops all that we has started.

  20. Our world is unfair; it suffers from various social issues such as inequality. Nelson Mandela was a well-known freedom fighter in South Africa around 1960`s. Mandela said that as long poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest. The quotation is referring towards the fact that as long as countries and individuals are facing problems around our world we will not be able to relax, individuals and countries without these problems, which are the ones that have more than enough money and welfare, would not for that reason necessarily make them happy. Take Norway as an example and compare it to poor countries. We in Norway throw away around 300 thousand tons of food a year, and at the same time there are tons of poor people struggling to get the food they need. The balance is so ridiculously uneven, and the society does not benefit from inequality and injustice. Which is why both the rich and poor work hard to get rid of the inequality and poverty etc. in order to get OUR world equal. Until then we can never truly rest.

  21. “As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest.” It is a powerful quote by the famous freedome fighter Nelson Mandela. Behind this poweful quote it is an importante message that we all interpreter different. He means maybe that as long as it is war, hatret, poverty and all these sort of things we can never relax and rest entierly because it will always be something we are worrying about. We can maybe be worrying about what happends in another country where it is war or you can be worried about something as small as a small test. This quote makes really much sense because of all these things that are happening in the world today. For example we are still trying to get rid of poverty with giving away money to the poorest countries in the world, but we just keep taking more and more money from them and this won’t get rid of the poverty in the world that means that we can never truly rest.

  22. The meaning of the quote is that the world is really unfair and the rich people control the world and the “poor” people don’t control a shit. He meant that the “poor” people should control more and the rich people should control less. . If we got balance between the rich and the poor we could relax. The people that work harder should get paid more. The person that is just sitting on an office is getting more money than the hard workers who makes clothes twelve hours a day. The quote is really good because he tells us how the world is right now.

  23. "To deny someone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity.

That to deny someone rights can also deny peoples identity and how they look at themselves. That because they are black and get treated badly and unfair makes can make them dislike themselves and that will make theyr identity to something else than who they are. That will also make a big group of people unsure about who they are and why they get treated differently than the white people.
I agree with it I guess. Because the black people has been treated really bad and it seems really unfair.
Im not sure what the last means…

  24. Some people are rich and some people are poor. The world is unfair. Discrimination, racism, nationalism, ethnocentrism are all very common issues in the world all around us, that we face everyday. Over the years we have had several freedom fighters. A freedom fighter is a person who fights against an unfair situation or a problem. Nelson Mandela is one of the most famous freedom fighters through the years. Mandela said that “As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest.” This quote is very strong. In the rich countries we throw away things that the poor people could really need. Many rich people don’t appreciate the things we have. We throw away tons of food, and we don’t really care. Some extremely poor people would love to eat some potatoes, or a bowl of soup. They would've appreciated the little things we have. So this quotation means that; since the world is unfair, none of us can rest because if we think about how stupid it is when we don’t care about the little things we have. We should feel guilty. The poor people would've appreciated the things we don’t appreciate. So if we think about that none of us can truly rest!

  27. To deny someone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity. It is a quote that is by a freedom fighter with name Nelson Mandela. I think that the quote means that people filed that their own humanity was a challenge in their life. And that other people can domination others because of their background, their personality, or for example their skin-color

  28. To deny someone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity is a quote by the man himself Nelson Mandela.

He was a human fighter that fights for freedom by skin tone.
I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.

The meaning stands for challenge the different choices of people in other skin, you need to live with the coiches other people live in. like if you move to a country there is islam humanity you need to live with the choices they live with.

So I think that the meaning is seen to learn to people live with other choice.

  30. "As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest."
Today there are people all over the world that suffer and live under bad conditions, and one of the reasons of this is because they live in poverty. Nelson Mandela is a very important person when you talk about this. Mandela was a person that often set all other people before him. He had a different sight on humanity than very many others have. Mandela has worked for the human rights towards black and white people almost his entire life, and has had great success fighting this. Mandela sad many great things and one of those are: “As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest”. The meaning behind this quote from Mandela is that the world is unfair. People will not rest until it is no more poverty and injustice in the world. As long as this is in the world the people can`t rest. But it isn’t all the people in the world that can`t rest because of this. The people in the rich land can rest because they do not think over it because it isn’t in their society. But in the poor land this quote fits pretty well with it. I can see what Mandela means with his quote and I agree and disagree, I can sleep because the situation and the racism doesn’t really affect me or most people around me which it does in other countries and South-Africa which was the country Mandela lived in. For him injustices, poverty and gross inequalities were his surroundings since his birth. And these are the surroundings are what many people face in life, me on the other hand got lucky and luckily I didn’t grow up with these surroundings.

  31. Two deny anyone their human rights is to challenge their own humanity.
Opinion that Mandela believes md these words is that you should not believe that you're so much better than others and that you can have power over other people and harassed them. for thou art not a preppy man. I'm agree with Mandela about this is that you can not believe that you are better than for example black skin person just so you have more money nicer clothes or finer car. it might just was that he responder’s very straightforward and has a great personality only if you take (innisjativet) to and talk to him.
Black white or yellow all the same whether you just get to know each other so we realize that the world can become a better place.

  32. Words of wisdom: Nelson Mandela
As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest. It’s a quote said by Nelson Mandela. For me Nelson tried to say something like “Today I am black, but tomorrow you can be black”. Throw the years of history there was many cultures so was discriminated and when they was free they started to do the same. Mandela wanted freedom for all the people and he knows that even one person can start the hate. I agreed with his thinking because we can see all over the world that hate make hate. Racism is made by bad feeling to a group of people and if you do something to them they will do something to you. Circle can go forever, but we can stop that if we will. In many years racism in USA was based on slavery and now hate goes back to the white. Black people still experience racism to now and circle will continue because some of black people are also doing the same.

  33. ‘‘As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest’’ This quote tries to tell us that even thought its not starvation in Norway doesn’t mean we should sit down and do nothing, we should give all help and support we can to make other country`s a little better then it already was. A good example on this is all the starvation going on in Syria, we should send money or food to Syria and soldiers to help these arias. We`re probably never ever gonna get rid of starvation completely but if we keep giving help and support to other countries who need it, we can make the starvation a little better.
